5 Common Washing Machine Plumbing Issues

If your washing machine has stopped spinning properly, is not draining or filling with water, or is entirely not getting power, then you may need washing machine plumbing services.

When it comes to washing machines, we tend to think it’s a simple hook-up job. We may think it’s all about getting a convenient drain track and a quick pipe installation that reaches the washer.

However, there’s more to washing machine plumbing.

As a modern household appliance that is extremely useful in our daily lives, the washing machine is at the helm of our day-to-day living.

Clean clothes, bedding, towels – all of these need a running washer and dryer. And if you need washing plumbing services, the last thing you’d want to do is delay it, lest not to impede or disrupt your daily life as well.

Overflowing washing machine

In today’s post, we’ll talk about the common washing machine plumbing issues and how best to fix them.

Ruptured Washer Hose

When the washer hoses get ripped open, water flooding is a potentially costly issue. You’ll get water flooding your laundry room and damaging your valuable items.

The number of times ruptured washer hoses have causes water flooding, and the damage is severe. To sidestep this expensive disaster, use braided steel hoses – rather than rubber ones. Braided washer hoses are sturdier. They can withstand more pressure – especially if your household goes through massive amounts of laundry on a daily basis.

Braided steel hoses are also not prone to leakage. They are equipped with protective barriers against leaking. On top of that, this type of house is relatively easy to install and inexpensive.

Leaking Exterior Drums

The exterior drum or tub of washer and dryers tend to leak, making this a typical washing machine plumbing issue. In the past, outer drums were made of either stainless steel or metal. However, the manufacturers switched the material to plastic for some reason.

And as you know, plastic is prone to cracks. Thus, any blockage in the washing machine can cause a crack or ultimately damage the tub. Several other objects can also create holes right through the plastic.

To prevent this issue, go through everything that goes into your washer and dryer. Make sure you’re not accidentally putting in coins, pens, pencils, needles, or other sharp objects. These items could lead to severe washing machine damage.

Washing Machine Plumbing, Filling and Draining Issues

If you are trying to fill your washing machine with water, but you’re seeing that the machine is draining the water at the same time, then that’s a plumbing concern.

This scenario usually occurs when you try to move the washer and dryer – whether it’s when you’re cleaning the laundry room or relocating it to a new place.

When you have this particular washing machine issue, it could also mean that the machine is overheating or overfilling. These two issues are different.

The likelihood of this scenario to be a washing machine plumbing issue occurs when the washer is not properly siphoning and absorbing more water.

Siphoning happens when the end part of the drain hose is not raised at the same level as the water inside the machine. Always check the water hoses and position them at the same level.

New Washing Machine Is Not Working

If you bought a new washing machine and it won’t work at all, then it doesn’t always mean the new machine is defective. When this happens, check the water pressure coming in. See if the valve that supplies water to the machine is turned on all the way. You may see that your old washing machine was working just fine, but was not filling with water quickly.

After checking the valve and water pressure and the machine is still not working, then contact a washing machine plumbing professional to get your water lines inspected.

Washing machine plumbing professionals can do the job right.

Other Leaks

When your washing and dryer doesn’t correctly drain or is leaking, it may not always be a washing machine plumbing issue. It may be a clogged filter or the machine’s pump. Whatever it is, it’s best to always check the manufacturer’s manual – which you can find online if you don’t have a physical copy.

With any type of electrical appliance, preventative maintenance is always the best course of action to avoid major and costly issues.

I've been an expert maintenance plumber in Atlanta, GA for over 25 years. I love to camp, especially with my family. True cigar devotee. Years ago when we took our oldest daughter to Disneyland, we stopped by an exceptional cake shop who owned this domain. She’s now moved on and has her own beautiful family. But now every time I make a new post on this blog I think of her.
